A unanimous vote by the seven Aldan Borough Council members increased the Borough’s 2012 Property Tax rate by 8% to 6.111 mills. That equates to a tax of $611.10 for the average home assessed at $100,000.
The 2012 hike when added to increases for 2010 and for 2011 equals a 16% rise in the property tax rate since 2009. For the average home owner (with a $100,000 assessment), this increase equals an additional $85 over the 2009 tax amount.
In addition to raising the property tax rate, sewer fees were increased by 9.7% to $329 per unit. The trash fee will remain at $140.42 per unit.
The average homeowner (with a $100,000 assessment) will pay an overall 7.4% increase in 2012 to $1,080.52 for all municipal services.
Since 2008, the average Aldan resident (home assessment of $100,000) has seen a $154.73 rise in taxes and fees paid to the Borough. That equates to a 16.7% increase in taxes and fees during that time.
For the second year in a row, the largest percentage decrease in the budget, -14.9% for the year, was absorbed by the Historical Commission and the borough parks, down 27.8% over the two years.
The largest percentage increase for 2012, +13.6%, was in the Law & Ordinance budget which includes code enforcement and inspection costs.
Police expenditures remain the largest annual expense at almost 40% of the total.
The final 2012 budget total of $2,401,098.00 represents a 3.3% increase from 2011.
In addition to the annual revenues, Aldan Borough has reserve funds (i.e., savings accounts), which total $783,455.51 as of the budget passage date, 12/14/2011. Those reserves equal 32.6% of the total 2012 budget and are not included in 2012 revenues or expenditures.
